姓名是人们的生活中非常重要的一部分，不仅是一种语言现象，同时也是具有丰富内涵的文化现象。本文就英汉语的姓氏来源、取名方式、名字的文化内涵等方面的异同进行探讨，以期增进跨文化交际中的认识，促进沟通和交流。

Abstract

As an important role in our life，name not only is a linguistic phenomenon but also reflects a culture with rich meaning. This paper attempts to compare this phenomenon between Chinese and English in origin of surname, naming patterns, and cultural connotation so as to help enhance cross - cultural awareness and improve communication and mutual understanding.

1. Introduction
Name, used to call one person and distinguish him with others, is a kind of language mark. So every name has specific object. As a unique phenomenon of human society, it has profound and abroad relationship with complex culture of the society. People in every nationality have their own names. A person’s name is not just a simple symbol. It contains abundant cultural connotation behind the simple name. We can say that it is a window which reflects national culture. This paper attempts to compare this phenomenon between Chinese and English in origin of surname, naming patterns, and cultural connotation so as to help enhance cross - cultural awareness and improve communication and mutual understanding.
This paper is composed of five parts. The first part is an overall introduction of the paper, including significance of the research and organization of the paper. The second part provides a comparative study of Family names. The third part provides a comparative study of naming patterns. The forth part provides a comparative study of cultural connotation of names. The fifth part serves as a conclusion of the paper. It summaries the main point of the research.
