Abstract:

As a mirror reflecting the society, a language plays an important role in imaging the social views and values. Sexism in our society is such inevitably reflected in the use of language. Sexism means the prejudice based on another sex and it is a social problem which has a long history. It exists in almost every language. With the rise of feminism, this issue has attracted more attention and the feminists have made some achievements. The thesis summarizes the sex discrimination in English by using much evidence, and they are shown and discussed in semantics field, address terms, language discourses and idioms or proverbs. Last but not least, I try to expose the sexism in English and from historical aspect, social aspect and cultural perspective to illustrate its causes. In order to promote the social development and the equality of male and female, some ways are proposed to avoid sexism.

摘  要：

语言作为反映社会的一面镜子，它在社会观和价值观的导向方面起着重要的作用。社会中的性别歧视现象通过语言的使用毫无保留的展现了出来。性别歧视意味着一种性别对另外一种性别产生的偏见，他是一个历史久远的社会问题。性别歧视几乎存在于每个语言中。随着妇女解放运动的兴起，性别歧视受到了广大关注，女权主义者取得了一定进展。本篇论文总结了英语中的性别歧视问题，并试图从语义、称呼、语篇、成语以及谚语等方面举出许多具体例子，来证明以上观点。最后也是最重要的一点，这篇论文试图揭示英语中的性别歧视现象，从历史，社会和文化等角度分析它的产生。为了促进社会发展，本论文提出几个避免性别歧视的办法，以求在生活中能实现男女平等。
