Abstract
DINK is the abbreviation for Double Income No Kids. It is a natural tendency and indicates that the world is in the period of social transformation. The DINK phenomenon first appeared in America in the 1960s. Since the implementation of reform and opening up policy, great changes have taken place in China. As a result, China is becoming more and more multicultural and international. The DINK phenomenon appeared in China in the 1980s. This new lifestyle finally blended with the traditional Chinese lifestyle. Thus, a unique group of Chinese young couples emerged. Traditional family concepts are pervasive in China, but DINK is accepted by more and more young people.
However, due to the traditional concept popular for thousands of years that having more children is equivalent to having more happiness, there are different opinions on DINK. This paper will focus on the DINK phenomenon and emphasize the status quo of DINK in current China, its causes, its advantages and disadvantages and the different public attitudes. By analyzing all the above aspects, we will have a better and more comprehensive understanding of DINK.
The traditional concepts of fertility are very different from those in current China, but it must be admitted that the DINK couples’ choices are opposed to the traditional concepts and their behavior is different, but it is their personal choice. People should treat them with respect, understanding and tolerance. They have unusual pursuit and courage. There’s no doubt that this is a symbol of civilization and and inevitable demand of social transformation. Sometimes, small matters would gradually indicate a major trend. What we should do is to treat things dialectically. Then we would find a way to a better future and a proper attitude towards the social problems.
