Abstract

    Amy Tan, who is a very well-known author in the Chinese American literature released in 1989 her first novel The Joy Luck Club, which is enthusiastically approved by both the audiences and the reviewers. In this work, Amy Tan elaborates on the mother-daughter relationships by the mothers and daughters raised in different cultural backgrounds, which show the differences and integration between China and the United States, and thus exert a significant impact on Chinese-American culture. In this thesis, cultural conflict and integration in Amy Tan’s novel are mainly researched. First, the writing background and the author are introduced. Afterwards from Chinese-American cultural differences, the conflict of the mothers and daughters are analyzed, which show that the two generations in different environments have different family values and experiences. Finally, the conflict between Chinese and American cultures is recognized. At the same time, the two cultures should finally reach integration and common development through understanding and respecting different cultures and adopting a positive attitude towards cultural differences and conflict.

摘要

美籍华裔作家谭恩美在1989年出版她的第一部小说《喜福会》，自从小说出版，就受到美国读者和文学评论界广泛关注。谭恩美在她的小说里，描述出生在不同文化背景下的母女关系，折射中美文化的差异以及母女在文化碰撞下的沟通，对中美文化交流具有很大的意义。论文主要研究谭恩美作品中体现的中美文化差异、冲突及融合。首先，介绍写作背景与写作目的。然后，分析中美文化差异造成的母女间的矛盾与冲突，剖析母女两代人在不同的成长环境下形成的价值观与家庭观，从而反映出中美两种不同生活环境和文化背景。最后，在发现中美文化间存在的冲突的同时，应认识到两种文化最终达到融合并共同发展的可能性和必然性，采取积极的态度对待文化差异和冲突，理解并尊重各种文化。
