Abstract

This paper focuses on violations of Cooperative Principle in Three Idiots. Cooperative Principle is the premise and guarantee for a successful conversation. It requires people to abide by its sub-maxims in the process of verbal communication. However, for some reasons, Cooperative Principle is often violated to indicate a speaker’s real intention in an indirect way. This paper analyzes how the dialogues from the movie violate CP and which sub-maxim they violate. These analyses are beneficial for the audience to grasp characters’ real intention and to understand deeper signification of the film.

摘要

本文运用格莱斯的合作原则理论，对电影《三傻大闹宝莱坞》的对白中违反合作原则的现象进行了研究。合作原则是使会话正常进行下去的首要前提和保证，它要求人们在言语交际中遵守这些准则。然而，人们常常出于某些原因违反合作原则从而间接地表达说话者真正的意图。电影是现实生活的反映，电影中的各种人物在电影对白中也会违反合作原则。本文选取电影《三傻大闹宝莱坞》中的一些对白话并对这些对话如何违反了合作原则和分别违反哪些子原则进行了深入的分析。这些分析有利于观众充分理解这部电影中的人物在对话时违反合作原则背后的真正意图，也可以让观众更加深入地领略影片所要传达的深层含义。

1. Introduction
In Grice’s view, to converse with each other, the participants must first of all be willing to cooperate; otherwise, it would not be possible for them to carry on the talk. This general principle is called Cooperative Principle, abbreviated as CP (He 2000). This definition has emphasized the significance of Cooperative Principle in our daily verbal communication. That is to say, people’s observance to CP has a direct effect on whether the communication can be conducted successfully. But in real life, not everyone will completely abide by CP for certain reasons. Furthermore, similar phenomena often occur in films, where the characters violate CP deliberately to reach their own intentions. This paper studies into the violations of CP in the film Three Idiots.
