Abstract: With the development of mass media, news is becoming more and more important to people’s daily life. As a bridge connecting people from different countries, English news provides readers with much information. A good command of diction features of English news is of great importance to those who are interested in English news since diction is the basic element in news and it is also the most active part in language. Studying the diction features of English news could help English learners to study English easily and effectively. The present studies concerning English news are confined to structures and grammar, and studies on diction features are not quite popular. Based on the previous studies and stylistic theories, this paper attempts to investigate the diction features. The introduction to the study is given at first, including its purpose and significance, and materials analyzed in the study. Then the literature is presented. This thesis focuses on the lexical features of English news extracted from world-famous newspapers, such as China Daily and The New York Times, including short words, acronyms, numbers, and hedges.

摘  要：随着大众传媒的发展，新闻对人们的日常生活越来越重要。英语新闻能够为读者提供许多信息。英语新闻是一座桥梁，它将来自不同国家的人联系起来。对于那些对英语新闻感兴趣的人们来说，很好的掌握英语新闻的词汇特征相当重要，因为词汇是英语新闻中最基本的元素同时也是语言中最活跃的部分。研究英语新闻的词汇特征能够帮助英语学习者们更简单而有效地学习英语。目前关于英语新闻的研究都局限在结构与语法部分，对于词汇的研究略少。在前人研究以及文体学的基础之上，本文将重点研究英语新闻的词汇特征。本论文首先介绍研究目的、研究重要性和语料来源，并回顾论文所涉及相关理论和相关研究，重点分析世界知名报刊，诸如“中国日报”，“纽约时报”中的英语新闻的词汇特征，包括短小词、首字母缩略词、数词、模糊语等。

As is known to all, the most effective way to spread information is mass media and different countries have to communicate with each other through this bridge. It is obvious that mass media, especially the news, is quite significant to us. For most learners, English news is not easy to understand because of difficult and unfamiliar words in news. Diction is the basic unit of English news and it is also the most active part in language. Learning about the lexical features of English news is beneficial to our better understanding of English news and to our English learning. The author wants to study the most common lexical features of the English news, especially those features constantly presented in political news. It hopes that English learners could acquire these features and apply them in learning English. At the same time, it will be of great help to readers to know better about the outside world by reading and understanding English news.
