Abstract:

Recent years, with the popularity of kinds of sitcoms in china, more and more American sitcom lovers can feel the great language cultural charm behind the humor and be entertained by those sitcoms at the same time. Generally speaking, people can only understand the illocutionary forces expressed by the uncertain, indirect and fuzzy words, which may be said to be translated into Chinese as 言外之意. That is the ambiguity we want to refer to in the context. Most scholars agreed that the ambiguity in the language is the barrier in the communication, but in the study of the dialogue of the sitcom Good Luck, Charlie, it can be seen that the necessary existence of ambiguity with the humorous background, especially the intentional ambiguity used in the dialogue, brings more humorous art effect of pun.

摘  要：

由于近年来各情景喜剧在中国的风靡，越来越多的美剧爱好者在被娱乐的同时，也感受到了幽默背后语言文化的魅力。像《好运查理》这样的情景戏剧已经成为英语爱好者的娱乐兼学习的最佳途径。大数情况下，人们只有结合剧中的语境才能领会说话人使用的不确定，不直接，模糊的语言所表达的多种言外之意，从而感受幽默语言的魅力，这里的言外之意就是我们要提到的在语境下的歧义现象，多数学者认为语言中的歧义现象是交际中的障碍，但是就对《好运查理》里面的人物对白的研究，我们可以看到在幽默的文化背景下，歧义是必要存在的，尤其是有意歧义，它更能使人物间的对白产生双关的幽默艺术效果

1 Introduction
  Recent years, the term ambiguity has become a hot subject in linguistic study. Ambiguity usually exists when there are no more context than the sentence itself. For example “he is a baby doctor” may be understood as “he is a doctor for babies” or can be interpreted like “he is a very young doctor”. Generally speaking, people can only understand the illocutionary forces expressed by the uncertain, indirect and fuzzy words, which may be said to be translated into Chinese as 言外之意.That is the ambiguity we want to refer to in the context. As a phenomenon of language, English ambiguity is divided into two parts from the perspective of communicative effects: intentional ambiguity and unintentional ambiguity.It also has a popular use in many different fields, such as advertisement, literature and communication. In the sitcom Good Luck,Charlie, more details of ambiguity will be found in the dialogue. Actually, we can get more knowledge about the reality of the society and the crash of different cultures from sitcoms. Most importantly, we can learn the unadulterated language. The sitcom is       like the real encyclopedia, at which you can have a good look. Because of the limited understanding of the other culture, English lovers sometimes cannot get the point of the fun in the screen, especially the expressed ways; in other word, these patterns can be expressed as the intentional ambiguity.
