Abstract

This paper made an attempt at applying theories and methodologies of critical discourse analysis to the news reports of China Daily and The New York Times. A comparative study was carried on in this paper, adopting six pieces of news reports, three from China Daily, and three from The New York Times respectively. The news reports talked about main conflicts between China and U.S. in 2010. Findings suggested that two kinds of newspaper, representing China and U.S., revealed the ideology difference on the same event and indicated the trend of Sino-US relation. Through this study, we might understand the power abuse in news report and the importance of arming our mind with the knowledge of CDA and developing critical language awareness.
This paper has five chapters, and the structure is as the follows: Chapter I puts forwards the origin of the news research and the research questions. Chapter II gives an introduction of CDA, concepts of ideology and power and its important use in media coverage. Chapter Ⅲ focuses on methodology of CDA. In this part, Halliday’s functional grammar will be discussed in details. Chapter Ⅳ refers to critical discourse analysis of six pieces of news reports from China Daily and the New York Times. Chapter Ⅴ concludes the research findings, implications and limitations.

摘要

本文尝试将批评性语言分析的理论和方法应用于《中国日报》和《纽约时报》的新闻报道中，并采用对比的手法，选取六篇新闻报道，中国日报和纽约时报各三篇。通过中国日报和纽约时报就2010年中美之间的主要冲突问题进行对比分析，揭示出中美两国对相同问题表现的不同意识形态,并且暗示着中美关系未来走向。通过此项研究，人们能够了解语篇中的权利滥用，利用批评性语言分析的理论武装头脑，提高批评性语言意识的重要性。
本文有五个章节，第一章 指出了新闻研究的最初原因和研究问题。第二章 简单介绍了批评性语言分析，以及它在媒体报道中的重要性，同时介绍了语篇，意识，权利的概念。第三章 简单介绍批评性话语分析的方法论，详细介绍了Halliday系统功能语言分析法，在新闻报道中常见的分析方法有分类系统，情态系统，转换系统和及物系统。第四章 利用前一章所介绍的常见分析方法分析六篇来自中国日报和纽约时报的新闻报道，更深了解批评性话语分析，也揭示出中美对于相同问题的不同看法。第五章 总结了研究成果、意义和不足。
