Abstract:

Nonverbal communication is essential for human communication, which is also significant to the study of intercultural and intracultural communication. Researchers have confirmed that body language used in the delivery of message is more important than verbal communication. Lie to Me is an American crime drama television series which plays an active role in exploring and analyzing the nonverbal communication. The analysis of nonverbal communication in this thesis is mainly based on this television series. After briefly introducing the definition, importance and function of nonverbal communication, this thesis divides nonverbal communication in Lie to Me into oculesics, paralanguage and kinesics. Combined with related research, through a large number of cases, it is concluded that the ability to understand and use nonverbal communication, or body language, is a powerful tool that can help you connect with others, express what you really mean, and build better relationships. Hopefully, the analysis of nonverbal communication in Lie to Me to a great extent would make it more effective for people in communication.

非言语交际不仅对人类交际很重要，对于跨文化交际及内文化交际的学习研究它也起着很重要的作用。而研究表明，人们在传递信息时一个人的身体语言往往比他所说的话更重要。《别对我说谎》是一部美国电视剧，该剧对非言语交际行为进行了细致的阐述及分析，对于探索非言语交际有着一定的研究价值。本文选取该剧作为非言语交际的研究对象，从非言语交际的定义、重要性、功能几个方面对其做了简要介绍，从目光学、副语言、身势学这几个方面对该剧中的非言语交际加以分析。结合前人对非言语交际的研究，通过大量实例进行分类、分析、归纳、总结，学习如何理解和使用非言语交际，使其在构建人际关系和表达言语意图上成为一个强有力的工具。希望通过对该剧中非言语行为的分析与解读能很大程度上促进言语交际的有效进行。

Introduction
It’s well known that good communication is the foundation of any successful relationship, be it personal or professional. It's important to recognize, though, that it's nonverbal communication—facial expressions, gestures, eye contact, posture, and tone of voice—that speak the loudest. The way people listen, look, move, and react tells the other person whether or not they care. When people’s nonverbal signals match up with the words they’re saying, they increase trust, clarity, and rapport. When they don’t, they generate tension, mistrust, and confusion. The ability to understand and use nonverbal communication, or body language, is a powerful tool that can help one connect with others, express what one really means, and build better relationships.
Verbal communication conveys the message in a convenient and direct way which makes people depend more on such communicative means while neglect the nonverbal one. So it is not surprising that nonverbal communication would be ignored by people, but recently nonverbal communication has received more and more attention and become a young science. In reality, nonverbal communication has been widely used in many fields, so it is necessary to learn something about it in order to improve our communicative quality.
