Abstract
The progress of globalization provides more opportunities of transnational business trade in which English business correspondences as a bridge for business communications are considered more and more important. One of the key features of business correspondence is politeness without which pragmatic errors and wrong delivery of information or even misunderstanding may occur. The types of business correspondence are various but can be briefly classified into two categories according to the nature of information they convey, that is, good-news letters and bad-news letters. Based on Leech’s Politeness Principle, the present study aims to explore the politeness strategies on structural, syntactic and lexical levels in business correspondences conveying positive and negative information. It may provide a reference for business letter writers to effectively achieve their business goals.

随着全球化进程的加快,跨国进行商贸合作的机会日益增加,商务英语信函作为人们国际间交流的工具显得日益重要。商务英语信函语言风格的最大特点之一是礼貌语言的使用,如果我们忽视其中礼貌原则的运用则很容易出现语用失误而导致交际无法进行,甚至会引起交际双方的种种误会。商务信函包括多种类型,按照其传达信息的性质,可以简单分为传达正面和负面信息的商务信函。本论文拟采用利奇的礼貌原则为理论基础,从语篇、句法和词汇三个层面分析英语商务英语信函在传达正面及负面信息时所采取的礼貌策略。本文能够为更有效地实现商务交际的目的以及商务英语信函写作提供启示。
