Listening and reading are two different ways of receiving language information in our daily communication. Listening is a most common form of language comprehension, which is a critical element in the competent language performance of foreign language learners. Language acquisition is mainly by way of a large quantity of comprehensible input. Asher’s “total physical response (TPR)” stresses the role of comprehension as learners are given quantities of language to listen to before they are encouraged to respond orally. (Asher, 1965: 294) As Rost points out that listening is vital in language learning because it provides input for learners. Without understanding input at the right level, learning cannot begin. It plays an important role in the process of language acquisition, facilitating the emergence of other language skills.
