1 Introduction
Diplomatic language is a language used in diplomacy as a communicative channel to manage relations between countries. It distinguishes itself from daily used language with the features such as euphemism and vagueness. For recent years, many scholars, such as Guo Liqiu, Wang Hongli, Jin Guihua, have paid attention to the study of diplomatic language. They give much importance to the study of the stylistics, strategy, euphemism while less attention is paid to the study of vagueness in diplomatic language.
Diplomatic language is thought to be both precise and vague. (Guo Liqiu, Wang Hongli, 2002: 81-82) It is not difficult to understand that diplomatic language should be precise because accuracy is one of the features of effective communication. However, sometimes diplomatic language also needs to be vague. Probably the most likely reason for this is that the vague language helps achieve some special effect that can not be realized by the precise one. In recent years, vagueness is often studied from the perspective of pragmatic field.
