Abstract
All kinds of people contact and communicate with each other everyday, exchanging names is the first step to know each other. The messages which a name carry is not only the best wishes of the namer, it has deep-stated meanings. Name, can be divided into surname and given name. Name is the most widely used carrier of language, which is a epitome of history, society, values, etc. The value of the research in names should never be neglected. And finding values behind the names is the research area of this thesis.
The research based on a large number of Chinese and English names and make comparison by different angles. This thesis aimed to find out the values which reflected from Chinese and English names, discuss the differences between Chinese values and British values through the comparison on origins, implied meanings, forms and naming orientations of Chinese names and British names. Finally the author found that the main values which caused all the differences are their family values, personality values, and eudaemonism. Chinese people even have the values about aesthetics.
At last, the author also gave useful naming suggestions of Chinese and English names. It’s helpful for the cross-cultural communication.

摘        要
形形色色的人每天都在彼此接触和交流，知道对方的姓名便是沟通的第一步。一个人的姓名所承载的信息不仅仅是取名者的美好祝愿，它有更深层次的内容。人的姓名，由姓和名构成，是语言最广泛的载体之一，是历史、社会、价值观等多方面的缩影，其研究价值不容人们忽视。而研究姓名中所能体现的价值观取向，便是本文的主要方向。
本文以大量的英汉姓名为研究素材，对英汉姓名进行了多方面的对比。本文旨在深入研究英汉姓名所折射出的价值观，通过英汉姓名的起源、寓意、惯用格式、命名取向等方面来探讨英汉姓名的不同，从而以小见大地深入了解中英价值观念的不同。最终笔者发现，对英汉姓名影响最深的价值观是中英两国人民对家庭观和个人观念，还有幸福观的不同，而且中国对姓名还有美学的追求。
最后，笔者还给出取中英姓名的相关建议，以便中英两国人民顺利地进行跨文化交流。
