摘    要
委婉语是一种共有的普遍语言现象。它不仅是语言文化中不可或缺的重要组成部分，同时也在人们的社交活动扮演着重要的角色。委婉语作为一个有趣的话题得到了人们长久的关注。
本文着重研究委婉语的使用原则及策略。通过对比研究来确认委婉语的使用与合作原则和礼貌原则的关系。同时通过研究语境列举出了一些委婉语在使用中需要考虑的谈话因素，从而进一步探讨如何在日常交际中适当，准确的使用委婉语。最后本文就委婉语的学习与使用提出了些许建议，希望对跨文化交际以及英语学习有一定的启发意义。

Abstract
Euphemism is a universal language phenomenon all around the world and can’t be separated from one language. As an important role in people’s social activities, euphemism, a topic of much interest, has attracted people’s attention for a long time.
This thesis intends to study the principles and strategies of using English euphemism. By comparison, you will find how the euphemisms applied under the guiding of Cooperative Principles a Polite Principles. Through the study of context, you will also notice some factors that you should take into considerations when communicating with others. Finally, we may discover how to use English euphemisms appropriately and effectively in daily communication. The paper gives some advice on learning and using English euphemism and it is expected to shed light on intercultural communication and English language learning.

1. Introduction
1.1 Background Information
Language reflects life and has imitated relationship with the social activities. Euphemism as a common linguistic phenomenon is indispensable in people’s daily life. With the development of the society and human civilization, people come to communicate in a euphemistic, pleasant and polite way instead of a harsh, rude and impolite way to reach an ideal conversation. Almost every culture has some notions or things that people do not want to mention. When such a notion or thing has to be referred to in a conversation, people will choose to use euphemism. Some euphemistic and beautiful words that used to express taboos or something sensitive also belong to euphemism.
With the development of globalization, the relationships among countries become more and more imitate. Accordingly the opportunities for people from different countries to get together are also rising. There is no doubt that the amount of the pragmatic errors become larger and larger, one reason of which is people’s ignorance of using euphemism. Because euphemism is deeply rotted in language, culture and values, we need an all-rounded research about it. Fully understanding of euphemism will help to facilitate the cross-cultural communication and reduce the accompanying pragmatic errors.
