摘　要

《简•爱》堪称英国文学史上的经典之作,评论家给予简高度的评价，他们认为简独立，勇敢，自尊自爱。但是对伯莎这个被囚禁在阁楼上的女人，评论却总是过于简单，武断且过于敷衍。然而，随着时间的推移，人们对于伯莎的积极评论也越来越多，且褒贬不一。评论家认为伯莎的出场次数虽少，却对《简•爱》起着不容忽视的作用。作者将通过归纳法，文献引用法等浅析简与伯莎的关系。作者认为 简与伯莎之间存在既对立有统一的关系。她们的背景，性格及命运都大不相同，但伯莎的每次出现都对简爱有着重大意义。伯莎是另一个简，她的所作所为也是简想要做但是却被现实所阻碍的。换句话说，简与伯莎是一个整体的两个部分，伯莎代表着愤怒与疯狂，简代表着诚实，勇敢与纯洁。

Abstract

Jane Eyre is regarded as the classic work in British literature history and the love story between Jane Eyre and Mr. Rochester is widely praised. Critics also speak highly of Jane Eyre. They regard Jane Eyre as independent, courageous, full of self-esteem and self-respect. But as to Bertha Mason, the mad woman who imprisoned in the attic, the comments were always too simple, too arbitrary and too perfunctory. Some critics were even considered the existent of Bertha is to foil Jane. However, those comments are mixed nowadays. And there are more and more positive comments about the image of Bertha Mason. Nowadays, critics consider that Bertha Mason lead a special relationship with Jane Eyre. Although Bertha Mason only has several emergences, the effect of her can not be neglected. The author will adopt documental method, inductive method and so on to analyze the relationship between Jane Eyre and Bertha Mason. And the author regards that there are contrariety and unitarity existing in Jane Eyre and Bertha Mason. Although their background, character and fate are quite different, every emergence of Bertha leads a great significance to Jane. What’s more, Bertha is another Jane and her behavior is what Jane wants to do but the reality deters her. In other words, Jane and Bertha can be regarded as two different parts of a whole. Bertha stands for the part of anger and crazy, and meanwhile, Jane stands for integrity, brave and pure.

1 Introduction
Jane Eyre is a passionate novel which describe a strong woman confronting the world with obstinate righteous. It is written by Charlotte Bronte. Jane Eyre is regarded as the classic work in British literature history. And it is a critique of Victorian assumptions about gender and social class. The main content of Jane Eyre is the love story about Jane and Mr. Rochester. In addition, there are many unique characters in Jane Eyre, such as Jane and Bertha. Both of the two women are lead close relationship with Mr. Rochester. Jane is the women who Mr. Rochester fall in love. Critics also speak highly of Jane Eyre. They regard Jane Eyre as independent, courageous, full of self-esteem and self-respect. And Bertha, who is a madwoman, is the wife of Mr. Rochester.
