摘 要
《理智与情感》是18世纪英国著名女性作家简•奥斯汀处女作,也在英国早期现代小说中具有重要的地位,并开辟了奥斯汀小说创作的高峰。小说以达什伍得姐妹埃莉诺与玛丽安的爱情及曲折复杂的婚事风波为主线,通过“理智与情感”的幽默对比,表达了奥斯汀关于爱情,婚姻等的独到见解。作为主要人物的达什伍得姐妹埃莉诺与玛丽安,在性格方面有着一定的相似处;同时,作为不同的个体,又有着各自独特的性格表现。本论文的目的是加深对达什伍得姐妹的性格及作者所要传达的思想观点的理解。通过对两姐妹的性格分析,有利于读者更好地了解作者主张的婚姻观。最后,读者可得出一个结论:幸福美满的婚姻需要理智与情感的结合。

Abstract
Sense and Sensibility is the first published novel of Jane Austen, who is one of the most well-known female writers in England in the 18th century. This novel shows its significance in the early modern novels in English literature and also marks a milestone in Austen’s novel creation. This novel employs humorous contrast of “sense and sensibility” to describe the complicated plot of Dashwood sisters’ love and marriage. From this novel the author expresses her unique views on love, marriage and others. As sisters, Elinor and Marianne must have some similarities in personality. On the other hand, since they are two totally different individuals, Elinor and Marianne have some distinctive characteristics. The main purpose of this paper is to help the readers to have a more profound understanding of Dashwood sisters’ characters and author’s point of view embodied in this novel. Through comparing the two sisters’ characters, it’s beneficial for readers to know more about the author’s view of marriage reflected in this novel. At last, readers can draw the conclusion that a happy marriage is the combination of sense and sensibility.

1 Introduction
Sense and Sensibility, published in 1811, is written by Jane Austen who is considered as a pioneer of the romance genre of novels in English literature. This novel shows its significance in the early modern novels in English literature and also marks a milestone in Austen’s novel creation. In the novel Sense and Sensibility, the biggest bright points are around the two heroines--the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne. The former is a sensible, rational creature, while the later is wildly romantic.
