Abstract
As a writer living in the following decades of the Industrial Revolution, D.H. Lawrence holds the view that the industrialization brings the human society deterioration and distorts human nature, and ruins the human civilization. From his works, we can get lot information about his view of death and it has always been a hot topic for his readers.
The novel Women in Love is such a typical representation of his death theme. For readers who have read the great novel Women in Love, the deepest impression this novel leaves is the death color throughout it. Characters in this novel, such as Gerald, Gudrun, Birkin and Ursula, are all representatives of Lawrence’s death consciousness. Through his description in vivid detail, the author shows to the readers his perspective, that is, death is the sources of rebirth. As Gudrun in this novel said, only if one gets closer to death, he can realize the truth of life. Many aspects in Women in Love have revealed Lawrence’s death consciousness, and in this paper, I choose to make some detailed analysis to the love experience of the two couple, Gudrun and Gerald, Ursula and Birkin, and the complicated relationship between them to clarify Lawrence’s death consciousness. And besides to those, the analysis of the four characters is also a key part. By that, we will certainly get a clearer idea about the author’s death consciousness. And through all of those analyses, we can get closer to D.H. Lawrence and understand his death consciousness, that is, death is the source of rebirth.
