摘　要

    福克纳素以长篇小说著称于世，但其短篇小说，无论艺术构思、意境创造、人物塑造抑或语言风格、结构艺术等，均可与其长篇小说互论短长，而其最著名的短篇之一《献给爱米丽的玫瑰》则对理解、研究福克纳的主要作品，即“约克纳帕塔法世系”具有十分重要的意义。在这篇小说中，作者以凝练的笔触、独特的结构成功地塑造了爱米丽•格里尔森这个艺术典型。小说中所描述的爱米丽小姐，拥有着南方贵族的美好光环。也许正因为如此，在人们的眼里， “始终是一个传统的化身”，“一个纪念碑”，是过出时代的象征，让人觉得高贵、宁静但又无法接近、怪僻。但是随着故事的发展，她的表现令人异常震惊：不愿埋葬死去的父亲，顽固甚至带有精神失常得拒绝缴纳税款，变态地杀死了自己的爱人，以“满足”自己对爱情的渴望，无不让读者感受到了她内心的极大痛苦，震惊之余转而怜悯她悲惨的一生，也体现了小说中的艾米丽在性格上已经出现了扭曲。但是，正是对于这样一位表现的如此“残酷，扭曲”的人物，威廉•福克纳依旧深情地献上了自己的玫瑰，这不禁使人疑惑：是什么使得威廉•福克纳献上自己的玫瑰？

Abstract

William Faulkner,one of the most famous writers , gains a lot of prestigiousness in American literary history. Most of his works are in the southern United States as the background, the emphasis on Southern themes and Southern consciousness. In this story, Emily Grierson, the main character, is a victim. Dominated by her father and his rigid ideas of social status, she has been prevented from marrying during her lifetime. One year after her father’s death, she falls in love with a northerner. When she finds that her lover is not going to get married with her, she poisons him so that she can keep him with her forever. Emily is serene, inaccessible and eccentric，regarded as monument.She refuses to bury her father,declines to pay taxes and kill her lover for the sake of keeping their love forever,all of these reflect the distortion of the Emily character. However, it is for this "cruel, twisted" figure, William Faulkner still offer his roses with his sincerely sympathy, which can not help but make people wonder: And why make William Faulkner presented his rose?

1. Introduction
Emily is the main character, the protagonist of the story. In this story, the author mainly focuses and reveals the main character—Emily. In order to analyze Emily’s character, some questions have at first to be answered: What type is this story or what kind of theme this story plans to reveal? When answering these questions, it becomes much easier to analyze her character.
