Abstract:
Virginia Woolf (1882—1941) is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of modernism in the 20th century. Her first steam-of-consciousness novel The Mark on the Wall, published in 1917 as an experimental work, had great influence on her later works and relevant theories. It is one of the earliest fundamental stream-of-consciousness novels in the world with a great pioneering significance in the history of Western modern novels. The six flows of consciousness involved in this short novel are developed from a single mark on the wall. The round mark on the wall triggers the author’s imagination which goes to six different directions like six streams. Though the novel has been studied from different angles, few people find its research value from the aspect of structure. Considering the blankness of this field, the author attempts to write the paper to arouse more professionals to set foot in this scope. This thesis analyzes the novel’s structure and features. It is divided into four parts — an introduction, an analysis of the novel, an analysis of the structure and finally a conclusion. It is hoped that this paper will help the readers and those who have interest in it to get better and more complete understanding.

1 Introduction
Virginia Woolf (1882—1941) is a notable British female novelist, an important essayist and an influential critic, widely regarded as one of the pioneers of modernism and feminism in the 20th century. And she is one of the four most well-known stream-of-consciousness writers, together with Marcel Proust of France, James Joyce of Ireland and William Faulkner of the U.S. The Mark on the Wall is the first stream-of-consciousness fiction of Virginia Woolf published in 1917 as an experimental work which had great influence on her later works and relevant theories.
