1. Introduction
David Herbert Lawrence is one of the most famous and controversial novelists in English literature. In most of his works, he unremittingly shows readers a picture of endless psychological problems. Sons and Lovers is such a novel which is best known by people all over the world. Also, it is considered as an autobiography. This book was written in 1992 and published in1913. Very similar to the experience of the hero Paul, Lawrence also grew up in a family with atmosphere strange. He was born in a midland mining village. Like Walter Morel, a character in Sons and Lovers, Lawrence’s father was a miner. However, his mother did not have a good relationship with her husband because of the different educational backgrounds, habits and life styles. Brought up in such a family, Lawrence was on his mother’s side. He was hostile to his father even when he was very young. After the family’s elder son William Ernest died, the mother paid much more attention and love to Lawrence. It made him hard to get rid of the influence of his mother in the years to come. Gradually, he could not deal with the relationship well with his girlfriends. Therefore Sons and Lovers can be viewed as a product of Lawrence’s early life. In this book, Lawrence used his unique technique and the subtle psychological description to tell readers an exclamatory and entangled story. The employment of realism and modernism is a distinctive feature of his writing style.
