摘要

本文分析了经典名著马克•吐温的《哈克贝利•费恩历险记》及其历史背景，并以此为契机，对黑奴隶吉姆形象的多样性等问题进行了讨论，解释了吉姆形象的成因及展现了他不同于其它的黑人奴隶的一面。有些读者批评吉姆太过于被动,但不可否认在这部小说中的吉姆是有很多优点的。通过对他的描述,使读者在领略精彩故事的同时亦可以了解了美国的蓄奴历史。同时，本文分析了马克•吐温对吉姆的描写的限制和优越性，以此来更深入的研究。

Abstract

This paper analyzes The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain and its historical background. Taking advantages of literature in the history, this paper discusses the multiplicity of Jim’s character and explains the causes of Jim’s image and the parts different from the other black slaves. Some readers have criticized Jim as being too passive, but it is important to recognize that Jim has many merits. Through the characterization of him, all the readers can not only enjoy the wonderful story but also understand the history of slavery at that time in the United States. Meanwhile, this paper comments on the limitation and advance of the characterization of Jim by Mark Twain, so as to further research.

1 Introduction

Whether in China or foreign countries, Mark Twain is considered as one of the most distinguished writers. His work The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is popular among people and it is regarded as the distinguished piece of the writer’s. The novel tells a story about the United States before the Civil War, around 1850, when the great Mississippi Valley was still being unsettled. It relates the escape of Jim from slavery. Through the character Jim, he tried to recognize some problems, for example, slavery. When The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was published, the slavery had been abolished 20 years already. But in the southern states, the treatment to blacks did not really get substantial change. Facing this social situation, and through the description of black slave Jim, Mark Twain condemned that the slavery was unfair, and that brought the serious consequences. Meanwhile, Jim has shown the initial awakening which worth being gratified. As a complex figure, Jim has multiple characteristics which deserve researching.
