摘要

在塞林格的《麦田的守望者》和马克•吐温的《哈克费恩历险记》中，两个作者都运用“成长”这一个共同主题来揭示如今这个经济高速发展的社会到底给我们带来的困惑。实际上,从《哈克•费恩历险记》到《麦田里的守望者》是塑造青少年形象的美国文学传统的继承和发扬。这篇论文着重于从历史的角度分析《哈克•费恩历险记》和《麦田里的守望者》两篇作品的异同点。历史的变迁，工业发展，都市生活，商业社会造成了霍尔顿与费恩人性的异化。

Abstract

In J. D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye and Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, each author writes about the similar theme of initiation, then to expose the hero’s confusion due to the rapid development of economy and society. As a matter of fact, there is literary continuity from Adventures of Huckleberry Finn to The Catcher in the Rye. But what is more important is the change from Huck Finn to Holden Caulfield. The writer in this thesis analyzes the change results from the historical change, industrial growth, urban life, inhuman conformity and commercial success.

1 Introduction

J. D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye is always being compared to Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The two novels were written more than half a century about two boys who seem like complete opposites, yet they bear so many similes to each other. Each author wrote his book depicting settings from his own past and based the plots on personal experiences. While the two novels are in different times and places, they have remarkably similar characters, plots, and themes. Salinger and Twain lead similar lives and used similar techniques in writing style. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye and Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn have much in common just as Salinger and Twain did in their lives. Both novels use a first person narrator, vernacular, and autobiographical settings, but the most significant similarity is the common theme of coming of age or loss of innocence. Both main characters are adolescents, runaways from society, seeking independence, growth, and stability in their lives. So this paper will analyze the simile and difference of two actors---Holden and Huck from the social environment and the characteristics of them, their Psychology, language and behavior and so on.
