摘要

    美国小说家玛格丽特•米切尔的小说《飘》以南北战争为背景，以南方的社会生活为生活环境的全景社会小说。小说全面展现美国南方社会风貌以及各色人物在巨大的社会变革中的命运变迁，通过展现不同人物在混乱复杂的社会环境中的命运变化，揭示了不同的性格所必然走向的不同的命运安排。生动形象的刻画了斯嘉丽这一典型人物，给读者留下了难以忘怀的印象。本文将浅谈时代背景对于人物性格形成的影响。以小说里面的时代发展为线索，阐述了斯嘉丽这一人物在经受一系列生活的变故，打击之后的性格发展及变化。战火的洗礼，时代的变迁让她从一个任性、自傲、娇生惯养的不安分的贵族小姐，成长转变为勇敢拼搏，有责任感，敢于挑战世俗的成熟新女性，这种性格变化是值得读者思考的。

Abstract

Gone with the wind is a great novel based on the American Civil War as time background and the southern society as life background. It fully displays all the features of the south society of America and the great vicissitudes of fate of the figures under the huge social changes. Then author shows us that different characters will lead the figures to the different ending, especially the heroine, Scarlett who is a vivid figure and makes a deep impression on readers. The paper is about the influence of the time background on Scarlett’s character development. In this paper, there is the analysis of the transforms of Scarlett’s character after suffering a number of misfortunes of life，around the development of time in this novel. And it will show how Scarlett change from a pride, conceited, vain noble lady to a brave, responsible matured woman.

1 Introduction

1.1 Background information of the novel
Gone with the wind is a masterpiece in the literary history of America. Margaret Mitchell, the author of the great novel, devoted ten years of her life into the creation about this work. The piece is also the only one of her works that was published when Margaret was alive. The name of it comes from the poetry of Ernst Dawson: "I have forgot much, Cynara! Gone with the wind." (Horace, 2002:1) It has been sold over 30,000,000 copies all over the world from the publication date to now. In 1937, Margaret was rewarded the Pulitzer Prize because of the novel. Two years later, the movie for which the novel was adapted, became the biggest winner in the 12th Academy Award.
