Abstract

    The main purpose of this thesis is to introduce and analyze the female strength in Uncle Tom’s Cabin written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. In the mid 19th century, America was experiencing the changes of rapid social development and cultural prosperity. This thesis aims to reveal women’s writing tendency and effects of female power at that time. By understanding the female power expressed in the novels, it will provide the readers with a new method to have a comprehensive grasp of this work. The paper gives a general introduction to writing backgrounds, which include the author and some interpretations of feminine consciousness, then explores female strength in the book and demonstrates effects of female strength. The reason why author creates the novel is to help voice out the necessity of women’s emancipation. As the era advances, women’s social status should change as well, which means a lot of at present.

摘 要

   本篇论文着重介绍与分析斯陀夫人的小说《汤姆叔叔的小屋》中的女性力量的体现。在十九世纪中期时，美国正在处在社会快速发展和文化蓬勃发展的巨变之中。文章通过分析小说中的女性力量来展示当时的女性写作的趋势和了解当时社会的女性主义思潮。这提供给读者一个全新的视角，以更好地全面解读这部小说。论文首先介绍了写作背景，包括了作者及女性文学的解读。论文从多个角度分析这部作品中的女性力量的体现，紧接着的是女性力量在小说中的作用，即表达对解放女性的呼声，要求女性地位应随着时代进步而变化。上诉的影响对于现今社会也是意义非凡。

1 Introduction
    Females have been in the absolute subordinate status once for a long time. They were denied equality in virtually everything, such as politics, economy, ideology, culture, ethics, cognition, notion, etc. With the development of feminine consciousness in America, females began to think about their freedom as America was trying to win freedom from Great Britain.
There are many studies about feminism in literary world. However, most of the previous research of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s works is done from the perspectives of the black culture or slavery literature. According to Jin Li, “at that important moment, a large number of white writers were so angry that they decided to disseminate the thoughts of ending slavery by ways of literature forms which were the most powerful weapons.”Considering the circumstances of the society, the attitude towards the slavery system became the hot issue at that time. Coincidently, the novel describes a slave’s story. Therefore, ending slavery becomes one of the motivations to create this novel.
