Abstract
Womanism is defined as a social theory deeply rooted in the racial and gender oppression of Black women. As time went by, this kind of theory extends to all women rather than just the Black. In this thesis, the author makes a comparison between two books: The Color Purple and The Awakening, and then elaborates on how women struggle for themselves to get rid of the racial and gender oppression. It mainly analyzes the two books through the four characteristics of womanism: anti-sexism, anti-racism, Afracentrism and Humanism in terms of the relationship between woman and nature, woman and art, woman and woman, woman and man. The author makes a detailed exploration on the four directions and indicates the importance of woman and significance to respect woman.

1 Introduction
In modern life, with the changing statue of woman, woman plays a more important role than before. In the past centuries, we have seen numbers of movements which were held by women and fight for woman’s unfair position. They struggled against the unequal position in life and also in policy. Just like Renaissance, the revival started because of the changing of people’s mind. In other words, the womanist literary is a clue to the movements of womanists. So if we want to know more about womanism, we have to study two representative masterworks---The Color Purple and The Awakening. By comparing The Color Purple and The Awakening, we can see the emergence and development of Womanism from different era, and diverse class. In addition, by doing this research we can reveal the significance of Womanism in the harmony between human and nature, the female creation and the completeness of human beings.
