Abstract

     Jane Austen, is a famous British female novelists, her works mainly focus on women’s marriage and life of the squire family. She wrote many famous novels in her short life, such as Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice and so on. This  research is about one of her masterpiece Emma, it aims to analysis Emma’s personalities in order to understand the novel. This thesis has five parts. The first part will introduce Jane Austen and Emma that helps readers understand the background of this thesis. The second part mainly analyzes the personalities of Emma, mainly her character flaws; The third part describes the formation of Emma’s personality including the influence of her family circumstances and love and marriage around her. The fourth part focuses on Emma’s personality change and the transformation of social reason and the character’s own factors. The last part of this thesis will make a conclusion.

摘 要

    简•奥斯汀是英国著名女性小说家,她的作品主要关注乡绅家庭女性的婚姻和生活。她在其短暂的一生中创作了许多著名的小说，如《理智与情感》、《傲慢与偏见》等。本文研究的是她的代表作之一《爱玛》，旨在通过对爱玛的性格分析来深入理解这部小说。本论文共有五个部分。第一部分将对简•奥斯汀和《爱玛》做相关介绍，帮助读者了解本文的背景内容；第二部分重点分析爱玛的性格特征，主要以她的性格缺陷为主；第三部分将分析爱玛性格形成的家庭环境和周围爱情婚姻的影响因素；第四部分探讨爱玛性格的转变的表现和其转变的社会原因以及人物自身的因素。最后一部分对本文进行一定的总结。

1 Introduction
    The intention of the present thesis is to study the heroine Emma’s personalities  in Emma. Jane Austen wrote many famous works, most of them are the reflection of her familiar life that stands for the most rural and middle-class neighborhood life in Scotland.
    The life circle of Austen’s description is very small, but her observation was nuanced, clever and reasonable, especially the characterization is as natural as though it were living. Her novels love to mock the ridiculous things and absurd characters. Emma, which most perfectly represents Austen’s genius, is considered as the most successful and mature work of Jane Austen by many critics. Personality is the special quality of a person, and often the description of the personality is the soul of a work of art. In fact the soul of a novel should also be the personalities of characters. Emma has various advantages and disadvantages of personalities, this thesis will analyze the characters to help everyone understand themselves and others, and understand the society and the world.
