Abstract
Willa Cather is one of the most important and productive writers of America during the 20th century. Being her masterpiece at the peak of literary career, the novel A Lost Lady describes the “lost” of the heroine Mrs. Forrester in the male-dominated society. Since its publication, it has called much attention in the critical world. Through making a close reading of the novel from the perspective of ecofeminism, the thesis has explored Cather’s real concern to nature and women. Ecofeminism is regarded as the combination of ecologism and feminism and came on to the cultural scene in North America and Europe in the early 1970s. Ecofeminism literary criticism investigates the inner connection between women and nature revealed in literary works. With the ecofeminist criticism as the theoretical support, the thesis has mainly analyzed why Mrs. Forrester is lost. Her being lost results from the oppression from the patriarchal society and her ignorance of the close connections between women and nature. The thesis has concluded that Willa Cather is a great writer with sincere consideration of women and nature.
