Abstract
Armed with rational thoughts, Portia, the new glorious female image created by William Shakespeare in The Merchant of Venice, failed to own her status. This paper intends to prove that Portia could not get rid of the fate of traditional women in the male-dominated society through analysis of her success and loss in the play.
