Abstract

The paper aims to study the puritanism reflected in The Scarlet Letter, the classic work of Nathaniel Hawthorne, also Nathaniel Hawthorne’s masterpiece in his career. In this novel, puritanism is mainly reflected in its setting and its heroine— Hester. The setting of this novel is in New England in the 17th century. The novelist tells a story about a married woman and her mistress, however, it is convicted as adultery in the puritan society. Hester, the heroine of this book, is a typical character who suffers from the harsh community and at the same time, pursues true love and nature.
The paper is composed of three parts. Part one is introduction, and in this part, puritanism and puritanism to the author are introduced. Part two discusses puritanism reflected in the novel, and in this part, the setting and the heroine are depicted applying puritanism. Part three is the final part, and surely it is the conclusion part.

摘 要

论文旨在探究在《红字》中的清教主义。《红字》是纳撒尼尔•霍桑的名作，同时也是他写作生涯中的一部巨作。在这部小说中，清教主义主要体现在两个方面：其文章情节设定和女主角—— 海斯特。小说设定在十七世纪的新英格兰。作者讲述一个已婚妇女和她情人的故事，然而在当时的清教社会被判定为通奸罪。这部小说的女主角海斯特是一个遭受当时社会抨击，同时又追求真爱和天性的人物。
此篇论文由三个部分组成。第一部分是简介部分，在第一部分中，介绍了清教主义及其作者。第二部分评述了小说中反映出来的清教主义，主要体现在情节设定和女主角。第三部分是结尾部分。

1 Introduction
The Scarlet Letter, the classic work of Nathaniel Hawthorne, is also Nathaniel Hawthorne’s masterpiece in his career. In this novel, Nathaniel Hawthorne imagines a story that occurred in the seventeenth century in the city of Boston, America. The setting of this story makes a decision on the thesis that it could be a description of religious life in that century of America. And it is puritanism.
Before rolling into the analysis of the puritanism in this book, it would be very necessary to refer to the idea, the history and the impact of this religious term.
