Abstract

Treasure Island is written by Stevenson which is a masterpiece of nineteenth-century new-romanticism. Because of its wonderful storyline and details, it is warmly welcomed by readers worldwide especially teenagers. The adventure of the hero Jim Hawkin is widespread,focusing on his adventures with thrilling story of treasure. This thesis argues that Jim is a child with complex characters. He has a genteel quality, but also has murderous acts of pirate. At the beginning of the adventure, he is keen to treasure and then gradually, he goes back to the right path. He keeps walking between the two hostile camps of gentlemen and pirates. Surprisingly, the two camps both regard him as an ally. He has been able to ease between the gentleman and the pirate which is a manifestation of the complexity of his character.

摘  要

    英国作家史蒂芬森所创作的《金银岛》，是十九世纪新浪漫主义的重要代表作品之一，也是其流传最广的作品。由于它精彩纷呈的人物描写与跌宕起伏的故事情节深受中外读者，尤其是青少年的喜爱。其中，男主人公吉姆的传奇冒险经历也已经成为了家喻户晓的故事。本文认为吉姆是一个性格复杂多变的孩子。他拥有温柔的绅士品质特征，也具有凶恶的海盗行为，因而具有复杂多变的性格。起初，他热衷于财富，后来他回归正途。吉姆不断地游走于绅士与海盗两个敌对阵营之间，而且两个阵营都把他看作自己的盟友。吉姆能在绅士和海盗之间游刃有余，足以体现了他性格的复杂性。

1. Introduction
Treasure Island is written by a British novelist Robert Louis Stevenson. It is the most widespread of all his works. The fiction originates from a painting map for his stepson’s reading. Because of its wonderful storyline and details, it is warmly welcomed by readers worldwide especially teenagers. The adventure of the hero Jim Hawkin is widespread. Readers focus on his adventures, thrilling story details or treasure. He has genteel quality of gentleman, but also has murderous acts of pirate. At the beginning of the adventure, he is keen to treasure and then he is back to the right path. He keeps walking the two hostile camps between gentleman and pirates and the two camps both regard him as an ally. He has been able to ease between the gentle man and the pirates and this is a manifestation of the complexity of his character. As a model of bildungsroman, it recorded the growing process of Jim. Jim is from an ignorant teenager to a sensible and mature adult.
