Abstract and Key Words

Abstract: As one of the representatives of the Harlem Renaissance in America, Hurston is popular for           her novel Their Eyes Were Watching God. This novel tells the story of Janie, the heroine, searching for her discourse right. Therefore, it is considered as the sutra of American feminist literature. Though many studies have been done on the main character, Janie, there hasn’t reached an agreement on the achievement of Janie’s discourse right. This thesis holds that the heroine, Janie, finds her discourse right and achieves self-fulfillment by analyzing her behaviors in her three marriages and community.

摘要: 赫斯顿是美国哈莱姆文艺复兴运动时期的代表人物之一，她因小说《他们眼望上苍》而闻名。小说讲述的是主人公珍妮寻找话语权的过程，因此这部小说被认为是美国女性文学的经典。虽然到目前为止对主人公珍妮的研究很多，但对珍妮是否找到话语权还没有达成一致意见。本文通过对女主人公珍妮在三次婚姻及在社区中的表现进行分析，认为她最终找到了话语权，实现了自我。

1.    Introduction
1.1 Introduction to the Writer and Her Works
Zora Neale Hurston (1891-1960), was the most prolific and accomplished black woman writer in America during the Harlem Renaissance, which was a flourishing of African American art, literature, music and culture in the United States led by African Americans community in Harlem, New York City. Being a black female writer, she was obsessed with the task of recording, preserving, and analyzing the patterns of speech and thoughts of the rural black south and related culture.
During her whole literary carrier, Hurston published four novels, called Jonah’s Gourd Vine(1934), Their Eyes Were Watching God(1937), Moses, Man of the Mountain (1939) and Seraph on the Suwanee(1948), two books of folklores——Mules and Men(1935), Tell My Horse(1938), one volume of autobiography Dust Tracks on a Road and numerous short stories and essays. It is Mules and Men that makes Hurston the first African American to bring African American to a wide audience while Their Eyes Were Watching God is now called the sutra of African American literature.
1.2 Introduction to Female Discourse Right
Published in 1937, Their Eyes Were Watching God recounts the story of Janie Crawford’s searching for love and freedom. In order to achieve a strong sense of independence, Janie listens to her heart and tries her utmost to find her discourse right, or the right to speak, which is the primary factor to find self-identity and to achieve self-realization.
