Abstract and Key Words

Abstract: This study aims to investigate the benevolence of the main character Sydney Carton in A Tale of Two Cities, one of the magnum opus of Charles Dickens. The benevolence which Dickens wants to eulogize and convey has rich connotations, including Carton’s affection for Lucy, Carton’s death instead of his rival in love ---- Darnay, Carton’s encouragement to a tailor girl. We could understand the meaning of benevolence which Dickens wants to convey, learn peace and friendliness from this novel. What is more, we will learn the most important point that love is more powerful than hate.

摘要：   本文通过的《双城记》中的主要人物西德尼•卡顿之爱的研究，旨在宣扬狄更斯想传达的仁爱精神。狄更斯想歌颂的仁爱，其内涵是相当丰富的，其中包括卡顿对女主角露西的爱慕之情，卡顿替情敌达内的慷慨赴义，卡顿在最后时刻对陌生裁缝女的鼓励。我们将更深刻地理解狄更斯想传达的仁爱的含义，并且会从这篇小说中学到和平与友爱。更重要的是，爱比恨更有力。

1. Introduction
1.1 Introduction to Charles Dickens and his benevolence spirit
In the history of both English literature and world literature, Charles Dickens is one of the greatest classical authors. In his works, he described coverall pictures of society and built a lot of impressive figures. During his more than 30 years writing career, Dickens had made a great contribution to the world literature. His representative work A Tale of Two Cities prevails over the world for over 100 years and is always welcomed by the reading public deeply.
    The creative writing of Dickens lasted nearly 40 years and the most important character of the content is to publicize bourgeois humanism. He hopes people can reach a mutual understanding and love each other. The poor should not lose dignity; the rich should treat lowlife kindly. The core of humanitarian thoughts of Dickens is benevolence, as it were. And this thought runs through his creative work.
    The novels of Dickens can be generalized in a few words: philanthropize and love. He trusts human nature, pity and forgiveness are the best virtues of human beings and intimacy, warmth and tears are the best things in the world. He thought only the man who knew gratefulness can be regarded as human beings.
