Abstract and Key Words

Abstract：Hemingway is one of the most famous novelists in western literary history. He is an excellent stylist and the winner of the Nobel Prize for literature in 1954. A Farewell to Arms is the masterpiece of his early literary career and was included in the “100 best English novels of the 20th century” by American Modern Library. This article analyzes the anti-war theme of Hemingway's famous novel A Farewell to Arms. By studying Henry’s entire journey from participating in the war with lofty ideals and faith, being despaired in the war, then falling in love with Catherine and losing Catherine at last, and studying the heroine Catherine’s miserable fate from her losing love to her obtaining love again, finally losing life, it discusses the hurt to people’s body and heart that the war brings, as well as reveals the essence of the war, thus reflects the anti-war theme of the novel.

1954年诺贝尔文学奖的获得者。《永别了，武器》是他早期文学生涯的代表作，被美国现代图书馆列入“20世纪中的100部最佳英文小说”中。本文主要分析了海明威的著名小说《永别了，武器》中的反战主题。通过研究男主人公亨利怀着崇高的理想和信念参加战争，到对战争的彻底绝望，再到与凯瑟琳相爱以及最后失去凯瑟琳的整个心路历程，以及女主人公凯瑟琳从失去爱情，到重新获得爱情，再到最后失去生命的一系列悲惨命运，分析了战争带给人们的身体和心灵的伤害，揭示了战争的本质，体现出小说的反战主题。

1. Introduction
Ernest Miller Hemingway (July 21, 1899 – July 2, 1961) was an American writer and journalist. He was part of the 1920s expatriate community in Paris, and one of the veterans of World War I, later known as "the Lost Generation". He received the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 for The Old Man and the Sea, and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954.
Hemingway's distinctive writing style was characterized by economy and understatement, which had a significant influence on the development of twentieth-century fiction writing. His protagonists were typically stoical men who exhibited an ideal described as "grace under pressure". Hemingway's fictions were successful because the characters he presented exhibit authenticity that resonated with his audience. Many of his works were now considered classics of American literature.
