Abstract and Key Words
Abstract: In chinese, “fate” means mingyun. Ming is the congenital quality of a person which we call heredity now and Yun is influenced by the postnatal condition which is named environment. Fate has been paid keen attention by critics and the researches on it are of great value. The ancient Greeks achieved supreme achievements in nearly all fields of human endeavor: philosophy, science, tragedy, comedy, and architecture, etc. The tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides in ancients Greece have enormous influence on later generations. This paper tends to analyze the meaning of “fate” in Greek tragedies,hoping to help modern people better understand their fate.

摘要:古人云:先天之命,后天之运。“命运”这一命题一直以来都为评论界所关注,颇具价值。古希腊,人们通过努力在哲学,科学,悲剧,喜剧以及建筑等各个领域获得了很大的成就。古希腊三大悲剧对后代产生了巨大的影响。本文旨在分析希腊悲剧中“命运”的意义,希望能帮助现代人更好的理解自己命运。

1. Introduction
The ancient Greeks achieved supreme achievements in nearly all fields of human endeavor: philosophy, science, tragedy, comedy, and architecture, etc. The tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides in ancients Greece have enormous influence on later generations. The interpretation of the fate has been discussed extensively. It is of great value to study fate.Some of the concepts of the fate continue their effects on the modern society in many aspects.
What this paper focuses on is a general analysis of the concepts of fate in the Greek tragedies. It provides a series of examples in the subject matters and different understandings of fate based on the culture dating back to the ancient time.
2. The Origin of Greek Culture
The Greek culture is the main origin of the European culture which enjoys great reputation in the history of human civilization. The character of this culture determines the tendency of development in western civilization. To talk about the Greek culture, one shall get back to the original form.
