Abstract and Key Words
Abstract: Published in 1995, The Reader was written by a German writer Harder Schlink. The book is different from his former detective stories. As soon as it appears in the market, it was warmly welcomed and has broken many records in publishing circle. With the background set in the early period after the World War II in Germany, the novel describes the relationship between a kindhearted, self-respecting, ignorant woman and a boy more than 10 years younger than her. They were firstly acquainted with one another by accident, fell in love, separated and had a reunion. The story, which can be divided into three parts with orderly structure, is both profound and thought-provoking. It portrays not only the unforgettable love but also the vivid characters. This paper mainly analyzes the roots resulting in Hanna’s suicide from the two aspects of the external causes and the internal causes. Roughly speaking, her suicide is not just a simple personal behavior, or her temporary impulsion, but involves the social background, other people's influence, her own personality. Therefore Hanna death is worth our pondering.
