Abstract and Key Words

Abstract: Jane Austen is the outstanding woman novelist of Britain in the early 19th century. Pride and Prejudice is one of her representative works. This novel takes the marriage as the main subject, shows readers the life of middle-class at that time vividly. Relying on the trivial matters in ordinary lives, it describes marriages based on different requirements and reflects the author’s viewpoint on marriage. Through the analysis of four marriages in this novel and their main roots, we get the conclusion that marriage should be established on love and mutual understanding and take money and property as the security.

摘要：简•奥斯汀是19世纪英国著名女作家。《傲慢与偏见》是其代表作之一。这部小说以婚姻为主题，生动地反应了当时中产阶级的生活状况，凭借平凡生活中的琐事，剖析出建立在不同基础和需要上的婚姻，同时折射出作者本人的婚姻观。本论文将通过分析文中出现的四种婚姻以及各自主要成因，得出作者对婚姻的看法：婚姻应建立在爱情和理智的基础上，金钱与财产作为保障。

1. Introduction
Jane Austen (1775-1817) is an outstanding female writer of Britain. She was born in 18th century when critical realism writer was in vogue. At that time, men had the source of income, could inherits the family inheritance, but the woman was very difficult to seek a dignified job to get the independent social status in the society. They did not have other ways to obtain their economical safeguard except marriage. The reality made them commit themselves to marriage.
At that time, most literary works took the exposal of social gloom as their primary coverage. But Austen didn't come under the influence of the Industrial Revolution and novel tendency at that time. She created her own writing style, took ordinary matters of middle-class as the main object, and took careful observation and profound character psychology description as main expression means. Finally, she became one of the most famous British writers.
In her whole life, she just created 6 novels, which took love and marriage as the subject. Although there’s no mammoth theme or complicated plot, it can still manifest the author’s micro- observation and profound understanding on human sentiment. At the beginning of the novel, Pride and Prejudice, she started with these sentences: “It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.”Clearly, it is a novel about marriage.
