ABSTRACT
As a black female writer, Toni Morrison is recognized as one of the most important American novelists. The bluest eye is Toni Morrison’s first novel, published in 1970. The novel exposes the negative impact of the white culture on the black people, and discusses the possible ways to resist the impact of the white culture on the black people.
In contrast of one black girl Pecola’s spiritual collapse and the other girl Claudia’s survival, this paper analyses two girls’ different attitudes toward white culture, their different life in the dominant white culture, and the different results. By contrasting the reasons for Pecola’s losing beauty and herself with Claudia’s gaining beauty and herself, in the face of white standard of beauty from the perspective of their respective families, their community, themselves, this paper is in an attempt to demonstrate that American black can find the way to survival.
