Abstract
Doris Lessing, the Winner of 2007 Nobel Price, is universally regarded as the most excellent and brilliant woman writer after Woolf. Her style is creative and changeable; her thought is profound and perceptive; her point of view is incisive and insightful; her idea is original and outstanding. With all the admirable characteristics that endowed within her, she travels skillfully and easily between the complicated themes of cruel and crushing war, hypocritical and hollow politic and suffering and struggling woman. It is no wonder that more and more various schools of critics are very interested in her works from the very beginning to present. And most of them pay much more attention to Lessing’s novels which are her representative work. Only of few of them are aware of her short stories. For the limited length, short story always has a more tightly knit structure than novels. That is, most of the time short story runs from the beginning to end without stopping, showing unconsciously the real feeling of the write in a certain degree.
This article studies Lessing’s short story “A Sunrise on the Veld”. The research method includes textual study, fundamental conception and comparative analysis. Through a close study of the text, the full understanding of writing devices, main idea and theme of the short story can make great contribution to the study in detail. Meanwhile, the studies of the epiphany, the awareness of death and the relationship of man and nature lay the foundation of theoretical support. All these give clues to the study of Lessing’s concept of growth.
This article not only makes it available to understand Lessing’s concept of growth, but also provides a possibility of acquainting with the concept of growth of writer, the soul sculptor of human beings.
