Abstract
The English novelist George Orwell creates a society ruled by totalitarianism in his novel 1984. His clear and vivid portrait astounds the readers, winning for the novel the position of a classic in modern western literature. In the novel, Orwell exposes how totalitarian power controls people’s daily life, behaviors and thoughts in order to make its rule last forever. As a result, people in such a society live miserable lives, deprived of humanity and basic emotions. Meanwhile, they are isolated as lonely individuals without true communication with others. Against this backdrop, the author describes the protagonist Winston’s love story with Julia, which enlivens the otherwise totally depressing atmosphere of the work. Readers are prompted to speculate on the author’s intentions to include this element of love. Through the analysis of the process of falling love and the breaking of the relationship, and the reasons for these two characters’ decision to love regardless of dangers in such a cruel and hostile environment, we can find the close relationship between the description of love and the core theme of totalitarianism. In fact, the description of love is used to stress the core theme, which can better reveal the harm of totalitarianism to human beings and human society. What’s more, the love story deepens the core theme, which, while exposing the trauma of totalitarianism, attests to the greatness of humanity and the importance of love.
