Abstract
Robinson Crusoe, the hero of Robinson Crusoe, is not only a powerful representative of the new bourgeois, but an economic man, in principle, a mercantile man. Besides, he is a diligent enterprising man and a hero indomitably struggling in misfortune. Although he had been trapped in harsh conditions for 28 years, he used his wisdom and courage to overcome the solitude of his heart, the ruthless of the nature and savage wars with primitive wild humans, and finally succeeded in escaping the deserted island. Then he went back to Britain and finally accomplished his splendid journey. Since “Robinson Crusoe” was published, Robinson had been discussed and analyzed in many thesis, magazines and papers. Comments about how he could accomplish that unbelievable work, he could overcome the inner and external fears, and how he managed to get rid of the cursed fate could be found in many files.
This study employs character analysis and psychoanalysis theory as its theoretical foundation and adopts content analysis and case study as the research methods. This thesis begins with making clear the era background of Robinson Crusoe and introduces his living background and character, foreshadowing theoretic states afterwards. Later it analyses his survived skills in harsh conditions in three cases, which are respectively the challenge of mentality, the challenge of the nature and the fights with primitive wild people. Next part is a comparison of Robinson Crusoe with another three kinds of people whose vocational nature is similar to Robinson’s and gets the conclusion that his businessman’s character has a special influence on his survival. Finally is the summary of the thesis.
This thesis is not only a necessary supplementary to the analysis about Robinson’s survival skills in deserted island, but also has a comparison of his vocational nature to three other similar jobs, trying to get the influence of his businessmen’s character on his survival skills. The reading of this part will provide certain references for further related research on Robinson.
