Abstract:

Patriarchy is a system of social structures and practices in which men dominate, oppress and exploit women. In a patriarchal society, women are oppressed by men and become subordinates of men. Influenced by second-wave feminism, Angela Carter advocates feminism in most of her works, especially in The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories. The paper, based on the analysis of The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories, aims to explore how Carter deconstructs master narratives and reconstructs new stories from a new female point of view through adaptation and appropriation. It also elaborates on how Carter reveals the objectivity of women in a patriarchal society and how she subjectifies her female characters for the purpose of raising women’s consciousness of their real subordinate position in society and appealing to them for the pursuit of equality between man and woman.

Key Words: patriarchal society; feminism; adaptation; appropriation; subjectivity; equality

1 Introduction
As Helen Stoddart argues, “Angela Carter is undoubtedly one of the most distinctive and daring voices in twentieth-century British literature” (Stoddart XII). After her death, Carter became much more popular. Commenting on Carter’s continuing popularity, Rushdie points out that “she has become the contemporary writer most studied in British universities – a victory over the mainstream she would have enjoyed” (Stade and Karviener 94).
Angela Carter is a prolific feminist writer whose works mainly focus on the topic of women and their experiences of the world. In Carter’s earlier novels women often face manipulation and imminent destruction by powerful male figures. Starting with The Bloody Chamber, however, there is a turning point in her works, characterized by more celebratory moments when women are able to overcome their oppressors. Her last two novels, Nights at the Circus (1984) and Wise Children (1991), represent female characters with greater awareness of the forces designed to oppress them and consequently more power over their own destinies (Cantrell 9).
