Abstract:

Mencius said: Men at their birth are good in nature. Kindness may be innate, and Tess is so. This paper will argue that a pure and kind and beautiful industrious peasant girl Tess's tragedy is the social tragedy or is it the tragedy of fate and personality tragedy? Or something else? She is the symbol of beauty and the embodiment of love. She dared to sacrifice oneself, with good wishes for life. Tess's soul is pure and virtue is lofty, but in front of the bourgeois morality, she was regarded as the typical that offended public decency, and as an example warning against lasciviousness. She is an evil that violates the clean area evil incarnate. Perfect embodiment in the understanding of life, love of life, rich feelings and loyal love, only can come from such a perfect purity. Hardy serious criticism of clay on behalf of the bourgeois morality, and points out that it has become a spiritual shackles. However, it is the crystallization of national customs and habits, the nature of the divine. This is the unwritten law, is considered to be legitimate things forever. Tess is a victim of the secular fallacy. Hardy through the tragedy of Tess, heartlessly reveals the moral hypocrisy and evil, and exposed the cruel content.

摘  要：

孟子说：人之初，性本善。善良或许是人与生俱来的，苔丝就是如此。本文将呈现一位纯洁善良又美丽勤劳的农村姑娘苔丝的悲剧是社会悲剧？是命运悲剧？还是性格悲剧？抑或是三种之外的什么？她是美的象征，爱的化身。她敢于自我牺牲，勇于自己反抗，且对生活抱有美好的愿望。苔丝的灵魂是纯洁的，道德是高尚的，但是在资产阶级的道德面前，她却被看成伤风败俗的典型，奉为警戒淫荡的榜样，是侵犯了清白领域的“罪恶化身”。 人的完美体现在对人生的理解、对生活的热爱、感情的丰富和忠实的爱情之中，只有从这样的完美中才能产生出纯洁来。哈代严厉批评了克莱代表的资产阶级的伦理道德，指出它已经成为人们精神上的枷锁。然而正是这种民族风俗习惯结晶的伦理道德，它具有神圣的性质，是不成文的法律，被认作永远正当的东西。苔丝就是这种世俗谬见的牺牲品。哈代通过苔丝的悲惨遭遇无情结揭示出这种伦理道德的伪善及其劣根性，把它的残酷内容暴露出来。

1 Introduction to Tess of the D’Urbervilles
Tess of the D’Urbervilles is one of the Hardy’s representative novels. It tells us the story of Tess who had a poor family, and in order to well support her whole family she went to be a feeder in the D’Urbervilles. There Ale D’Urbervilles tried his best to get close to Tess and he had affection towards Tess. Eventually, Tess lost her Chastity and got pregnant. In order to get rid of Alec, Tess again returned home and lived a harder life. Once again, in order to earn a living, she went to a Taub Access diary farm. There she fell in love with Clare who was fond of farming very much .But because of his lose Charity, she was finally deserted by him. And in the course of Tess’s lifelong time she fought against these problems. Meanwhile, we can see clearly her apparent honorable personalities. .
