Abstract:

Growth refers to the process of a person’s constant maturity, and it carries with something better. Plenty of people consider adolescent development a bit puerile. However, to our attention, a man’s character is formed in the days of his or her juvenility. And there are more or less children’s minds in great masterpieces. This thesis probes into the growth of Juli in Flipped by focusing on interpersonal relations, conduct of life, family education, and self-perception presented in the novel. The thesis also puts into consideration the American schooling, individual values and the differences between American and Chinese teenage life. It comes to a conclusion based on the analysis mentioned above.
     Bryce and Juli’s growth story lets readers live at puberty once again. It tells us to learn to communicate sincerely, gain self-awareness and comprehend the truth that the whole is greater than the sum of parts. Only if the public have a heart of gratitude, can they realize the essence of life.

成长是指一个人不断走向成熟的过程，它带有一种向上的力量。在很多人的眼里看来，青少年的成长有些幼稚。然而，需要我们注意的是，一个人的性格是在年少的时候养成的，而伟大的作品也或多或少都带有童心。本论文主要将以人际关系、生活态度、家庭教育、自我知觉四大方面为着重点，并结合原著的诸多细节、当时美国的学校教育、个人主义价值观，以及与当今中国青少年成长模式的对比，探讨《怦然心动》中朱莉的成长，最后基于以上分析得出结论。
布莱斯和朱莉的成长故事让人重新活了一次。它告诉人们要学会真诚沟通，并且学会自我审视、认知，懂得“整体大于部分之和”的道理。只有站在真善美的角度，才能理解生命的真谛。

1 Introduction
Wendelin Van Draanen, a children-story writer, was born in a poor working-class family in Chicago in 1965. Her parents are both huge fans of literature. During Wendelin’s childhood, she had no delicious snacks and pretty dolls. As night fell, parents’ returning home from work was Wendelin’s happiest moment. She and her brothers gathered round the stove, listening to their mother’s stories. Such an experience brought up Wendelin’s most representative work the Sammy Keyes series, and she won four Edgar Allan Poe Awards in succession.
Flipped described that in 1957, the Loskis became the Bakers new neighbor. The first day seven-year-old Juli Baker met her peer Bryce Loski, she flipped. It’s his blue and dazzling eyes that Juli was completely infatuated with Bryce. Since then, Juli had been picking up Bryce with a lunatic intensity. Quite the contrary, Bryce did not have any affection for Juli and made all possible attempts to get rid of Juli’s devil talons. But Juli presumed that Bryce was just so shy that he did not dare to express his feelings.
