Abstract
Form and content are the two fundamental elements of literature. People generally hold this concept that content determines form and form serves content. The British female writer Doris Lessing’ experimental novel The Golden Notebook, however, has pluckily and creatively overturned this literary theory, thus it has become one of the greatest literature works of the twentieth century. The Golden Notebook tells the political, writing, love and spiritual dilemmas the protagonist Anna has experienced. The novel is developed around the main line of the development of Anna’s personality from splitting to integrated. The road of Anna’s spiritual integration has many similarities with the Jungian individuation theory. Thus, by focusing on Anna, this thesis will adopt some relevant theories of Jung psychology to analyze how the novel’s multi-dimensional structure and multi-perspective narrative express Anna’s individuation to get a new understanding of the relationship between form and content.
Key words: The Golden Notebook, Anna, form, individuation, Jungian psychology
