1.1 Introduction to Charlotte Bronte and Jane Eyre
1.1.1 Introduction to Charlotte Bronte
Charlotte Bronte (1816-1855) was born in the family of poor country clergyman in Thornton, Yorkshire. She was the youngest child of the Three Bronte Sisters, whose novels are English literature standards. Her sister Emily wrote Wuthering Heights and another sister Anne wrote Agnes Grey. Charlotte Bronte was sent in 1824 to the Clergy Daughters School at Cowan Bridge, which provided bad food and living condition. Then, Charlotte removed from school and started having lessons at home. Wide reading and home education contributed greatly to her writing. She went to Brussels to learn French. She worked there as a teacher for one year. She wrote Jane Eyre in the early Victorian period, when the conflict between labor and capital was sharp. Charlotte Bronte has an important status in literary world. Karl Marx says that “Charlotte Bronte, Charles Dickens, Mrs. Gaskell and Thackeray are the most remarkable British novelists at their time” .
