1.Introduction
1.1 A Brief Introduction to the Author and the Novel
Charles John Huffam Dickens was the master of English critical realism in the 19th century. He was universally acknowledged to be one of the greastest writers in the history of Britain. Charles Dickens, who was born on 7 February 1812, in Portsmouth, England, was the second child of his family. When he was just a little boy, his family financial situation was not too bad, so that he enjoyed a period of cozy time in his early years. However, because of failure of paying off the debts, his father was sent to jail and his happy childhood stoped abruptly. From then on, his life was filled with hardships and disgrace. What’s more, he lost the opportunity to go on with his educaion. The huge gap of life made Charles Dickens profoundly felt an abyss of suffering that people at the bottom bore everyday. That is the reason that we can find so many detailed depictions of impoverished life that people lived in his later literary works, and we can also feel his deep sympathy to the poor people and strong disappointment and dissatisfaction with society. After his death on 9 June 1870, Charles Dickens was buried in the Poets’ Corner of Westminster Abbey. The inscription on his gravestone reads, “He was a sympathiser with the poor, the suffering, and the oppressed; and by his death, one of England's greatest writers is lost to the world”.
