ABSTRACT
J.M. Coetzee,a famous South African writer, was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 2003. In 1986, Coetzee originally rewrites one of the founders of the English novel----Daniel Defoe’s The Adventure of Robinson Crusoe, which has always been the focus of attention of literary circle and has been acclaimed as the best example of rewriting British cannons in the 18th century. In Foe,Coetzee employs a woman named Susan Barton as the leading narrator from the first-person point of view to retell Robinson's adventure on an isolated island and cleverly invents how Friday lives after Susan rescues him from the island. Therefore, bases on the feminist analysis of Susan’s confrontations with male characters in Foe respectively: confrontations with Robinson and Friday on the isolated island and ones with Friday and Foe after back to England, this paper argues that Susan is the one of the representative of feminist pioneers who bravely fights against the patriarchy for the female discourse and Coetzee’s attempt to construct female discourse in Foe subverts the patriarchal discourse in The Adventure of Robinson Crusoe to a larger degree.
Key Words: Foe; Susan Barton; female discourse
Chapter One Introduction
With the emergence and development of the theory of postmodernism, post-colonialism and feminism, the rewriting of the classical literary text, especially the colonial classics has become an undeniable practice in English literature in the 20th and 21st century, for example, Caribbean writer Jean Ryes' rewriting of Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre into Wide Sargasso Sea. Such factors as gender, language, image, space, etc. are used by modern writers as the resource of rewriting of English literary classics, and as the foundation of the subversion of the original text, which reflect the introspection that modern writers show to the literary cannons. J.M. Coetzee’s Foe is the one of such masterpieces as shows up the bold backwash and subversion of the British traditional classic novel The Adventure of Robinson Crusoe.
