尤金•奥尼尔是美国戏剧界唯一的诺贝尔文学奖获得者，也是20世纪以来坚持严肃思考现代人的命运和精神世界的作家之一。他一生创作了近50个剧本，4次获得普利策奖，并于1936年获诺贝尔文学奖。《长日入夜行》是尤金•奥尼尔的一部自传体戏剧，也是他创作生涯后期的一部极具代表性的悲剧。詹姆斯•蒂龙是奥尼尔在《长日入夜行》中成功塑造的一个悲剧人物。本论文将首先探讨詹姆斯•蒂龙的个人悲剧，包括他在生活中信仰、理想以及尊严的丧失；再依次探讨他的整个家庭因他的原因而进一步遭受的种种不幸。接着会着重从历史背景、成长环境以及性格特征解释造成詹姆斯•蒂龙不幸命运的原因，强调他的悲剧是不可避免的。由于他性格的缺陷，以及对待生活的畸形态度，不但使他在当时物欲横流的金钱社会丢失了信仰，丧失了理想和尊严，同时也使整个家庭同样遭受着不幸，从而进一步揭露詹姆斯•蒂龙是造成整个家庭悲剧的根源。

ABSTRACT
   
Eugene O’Neill is the only dramatist who was awarded the Nobel Prize in American history. He is also one of the writers who focus on thinking about the destiny and the spiritual world of modern people. In his whole lifetime, he created almost 50 plays and won the Pulitzer 4 times. In 1936, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Long Day’s Journey into Night is Eugene O’Neill’s autobiographical play, which is also a representative tragedy at the stage of his later career. James Tyrone is a tragic character successfully created by Eugene O’Neill in Long Day’s Journey into Night. This paper will focus on James Tyrone’s personal tragedy in the beginning, which covers his loss of faith, dream and dignity. Then it will come to his family’s tragedy. Next, this paper will analyze the reasons that result in the tragedy from James Tyrone’s historical background, growing environment and personal character to further highlight that his tragedy is inevitable. Because of his character weakness, deformed attitude towards life, not only does he lose his faith, dream and dignity, his whole family also suffers their pains. As a result, it is not difficult to indicate that James Tyrone is the tragic root that results in the whole family’s tragedy.
