Nowadays, Amy Tan has become one of the representatives of Chinese American writers in the field of American literature because of her extraordinary thought and her excellent writing techniques. The Bonesetter’s Daughter, her fourth novel, has the theme of the mother-daughter relationship similar to her other novels. The novel exposes the complicated and contradictory relationship between Ruth, Chinese-American born in America, and her mother Luling who was a traditional Chinese mother. We can also find the complicated relationship between Luling and her mother Precious Auntie. Among the three generations, there developed a sharp contradiction and conflicting emotion. The main three characters recovered from trauma by writing their own experiences. In the end, they forgive each other and become reconciled. This thesis makes an analysis of the mother-daughter relationship in The Bonesetter’s Daughter from the light of trauma theory, and researches the causes of their conflicts from the theory of trauma. The analysis contributes to the conclusion: trauma theory provides the readers with a new way to understand the great literary woks.
