ABSTRACT
T.S. Eliot is one of the most influential modernist poets in the 20th century, The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock is Eliot’s early magnum opus. Seemingly a love song,The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, is indeed a mournful song which reflects the hero’s spiritual struggling. Depicted as a young man, Prufrock is a typical representative of countless young people in modern society. Timid and oversensitive, they still cling to their dreams; dissatisfied and disappointed with the industrialized society, they rebel hopelessly against its indifference; they bury agony and anger in heart, cowardly bear everything in life. The poem, written from the first person perspective, discloses universal emotions and mentality of a modern society. This poem’s impersonality inclination in artistic form and emotional expression has established Eliot’s early writing style, and meanwhile, embodied his poetics. Impersonality theory, the core of Eliot’s poetics, is fully utilized and realized in The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock. By a depiction of Prufrock and other urban images like narrow street, dirty hotel, this poem indicates people’s inner hesitation and the society’s corruption. On the other hand, Eliot, by means of an employment of artistic methods as image, allusion, monologue and so on, has successfully integrated thought and emotion in objective correlative in the interest of an impersonality style.
